Vertical vs Horizontal Winches

Vertical systems have several advantages: They take up less space on deck and are easier to maintain. They are less expensive than equivalent horizontal models. Chain alignment for smooth chain retrieval, while important, is not as critical as horizontal windlass alignment. With vertical systems more chain is in contact with the chainwheel thus avoiding the possibility of chain jump. Line-pull on the warping drum can be in any direction, as opposed to fore and aft only on horizontal models.

Horizontal models have the advantage of being better suited to applications where there is limited below deck space / accessibility, extreme deck thickness (over 200mm - 8"), or where two anchors must be handled from one winch.

Superbly styled, the "SY Series" represents a revolutionary level of modularity and flexibility as demanded by Superyacht naval architects and engineers. Available in a variety of power and size ranges, the "SY26", "SY32" and "SY38" are manufactured to suit a maximum metric stud link chain size as designated by model number. Various maximum pull configurations, via optional AC and hydraulic drive sizes, means Maxwell can accommodate any design requirement.

DECK GEAR
CHAIN STOPPER A chain stopper, or alternative stopping device, must be used to take the load off the windlass whenever a vessel is laying at anchor. It can also be used to secure the anchor in the fully raised position while the vessel is under way.
CHAIN PIPE WITH ROLLER An ideal windlass installation may require the chain locker to be situated away from the windlass. This is possible when using a VW model windlass in conjunction with a remote chainpipe. The Chainpipe-Roller provides the best possible solution to such a requirement. The roller (mounted on a self lubricated bearing) ensures low friction and therefore efficient and reliable movement of the chain from locker to windlass. The chainpipe portion covers the entry to the locker reducing the water intake. It also acts to guard the moving chain and provides an elegant look in keeping with the windlass. Maxwell has years of windlass installation design experience and strongly recommends consulting them for any installation, especially one that may need a Chainpipe-Roller.
STOPPER (S), ROLLER-STOPPER (RS), ROLLER-STOPPER-TENSIONER (RST) Boat designers and builders also asked if Maxwell could incorporate some sort of tensioning device into the chain stopper and the Roller-Stopper units. Thus was born the Stopper-Tensioner and Roller-StopperTensioner units. The RST became an instant success giving the boat builder a unit that he could simply bolt to the deck in front of the windlass and have a completely integrated system allowing safe and easy handling of anchor deployment and retrieval with any side pocket anchor installation. All Superyacht Roller-Stoppers, Stopper-Tensioners and Roller-Stopper-Tensioners come in a variety of sizes to suit Maxwell's complete windlass range.
CONTROL GEAR
AUTO Anchor™ 500 Series Automatic and remote control operation for safe and easy single handed anchoring. Auto Anchor™ determines the amount of chain (or rope/chain) deployed and provides one touch automatic retrieval. Auto Anchor™ 500C - for all chain rodes Auto Anchor™ 500RC - for combination rope & chain rodes (operates with solenoids) Auto Anchor™ 500RCX - for combination rope & chain rodes (solid state switching instead of solenoids) Easy to read large LCD display. Electronic fault diagnosis and easy set safety lock. Measurement in feet or metres. Simple installation, set up and calibration. Adjustable LCD back lighting for night operation. Settings retained if unit turns off or battery fails.
REMOTE UP/DOWN CONTROL Easy to use panel-mounted Up/Down switch for remote windlass operation from the helm, flying bridge or cockpit. Available for use with dual-directional solenoids. Manufactured from marine-grade materials. Splash proof. Includes power indicator light and back lighting. Suitable for use with DC 12V or 24V dual-directional solenoids.
ROVING HAND HELD REMOTE CONTROL Enables the operator to visually check anchor retrieval or lowering from the bow if vision is obstructed. Plugs into a waterproof socket on the foredeck or in the cockpit or wheelhouse. Includes marine plug and socket. Available in two cable lengths: 4 metres (13 feet) or 9 metres (29 feet) Suitable for use with DC 12V or 24V dual-directional solenoids. Other models available
CIRCUIT BREAKER/ISOLATOR PANEL Maxwell circuit breaker/isolator panels are available to suit a wide range of windlasses and capstans. For protection of the main conductor circuit for DC winches and the control circuit for hydraulic winches. Mount as close as possible to the battery power source to ensure protection against short circuit and to reduce the risk of DC motor burn-out in the event of winch overloading. Indicator light provides a warning against leaving your windlass turned on when not in use. Enables the battery, or electrical supply, to be isolated when winch is not in use. Suitable for all DC 12V or 24V systems.
DUAL DIRECTION SOLENOIDS Used in conjunction with remote up/down panel, Auto Anchor™ 500C/RC, roving hand held remote control and/or footswitches to switch the motor in the required direction. Heavy-duty solenoids, rated at more than 200 amps continuous. Optional ignition protected solenoids available. Available in 12V or 24V DC for permanent magnet and series wound motors. Sealed in a weather proof box. Installation in a dry area is always recommended.
FOOTSWITCHES Maxwell heavy-duty, weather resistant units have a UV stabilised water proof diaphragm and are supplied complete with mounting instructions and screws. Rated at 200 amps and suitable for 12V or 24V applications. Nickel-plated copper contacts ensure corrosion-free reliable operation Available in UV stabilised plastic or polished stainless steel covered versions. Uncovered plastic versions are also available. One footswitch supplied standard with each winch (except Freedom, Liberty and hydraulic units).
